The Administration Building at Shurtleff College housed the administrative offices and some small dorm rooms. The last students graduated from Shurtleff College in 1957 and the building was turned over to Southern Illinois University's Southwestern Campus. The building had a nurse's station for SIU students. It also housed a downstairs lounge and snack bar, where students could congregate after classes. A large open room on the first floor provided ample space for dances to be held on Friday and Saturday nights.
I was interested in the building because I first started college at SIU Alton Center in 1960. I returned to the Alton Campus in 1963 and the building was the center of activity. I took a photo of the building and had it enlarged. I traced over it on canvas and tried to stay on detail using acrylic paint. I added some trees that might have been there in 1963. The people in the front of the building depict how it might have looked in 1960's. I used model ideas from fashion catalogs and magazines. Most of my ideas were from personal memory. All the models faces were self-created.
