Publisher Elijah Lovejoy was killed by an angry mob in 1837.  Lovejoy was killed because he fought to defend his printing press and to abolish slavery.  The Lovejoy Monument that rests in Alton Cemetery honors him.  Painted in acrylic on a 16 by 20 canvas.
